Halloween Costumes for Fashion Hounds
We’re going chic this Halloween. Here are six of our favorite fashion-inspired costumes.
Iris Apfel: The Fashion Icon
Who doesn’t want to be Iris Apfel, businesswoman, interior designer and fashion icon, everyday? The 94-year-old New Yorker is as stylish as they come. Apfel dresses to suit her own tastes, paying no heed to the fashion rules of the moment.
What you’ll need: Glasses with black, round frames; cropped white wig; bold statement accessory pieces; red lipstick.
Sia: The Elusive Pop Star
Because Sia dominated 2014 with her hit Chandelier, and this costume is just too good not to recreate. And, let’s be serious, you probably already have a nude leotard somewhere in your closet. If not, you can pick one up at American Apparel. Bonus points if you can get a much shorter friend to dress as a “younger” Sia, famously played by Maddie Ziegler in the music video.
What you’ll need: Nude leotard; blonde wig snipped into a blunt cut with bangs; splashes of pink paint on your hands; confidence.
Frida Kahlo: The Artist
This year, the New York Botanical Garden brought Frida Kahlo’s home in Mexico to NYC with an exhibit that faithfully recreated her compound, including her garden and workspace. Let the artistic juices flow as you reimagine your costume of the legendary painter. Huffington Post recently featured 23 Khalo-inspired looks for Halloween—each one beautiful and unique. If you’re in need of a little inspiration, the Kahlo exhibit is open until November 1st.
What you’ll need: Pick a look from one of Kahlo’s famous self-portraits. We loved Instagrammer WhatIWore’s depiction of the artist: It’s simple and easy to recreate. All you need is a black dress and shawl; red chunky necklace; and a flower crown. Don’t forget the killer brows.
Karl Lagerfeld: The Fashion Designer

Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most recognizable faces in the fashion industry, and he’s always dressed impeccably in black, with a pair of black shades as a finishing touch.
What you’ll need: Fitted black suit; crisp, high-collared white shirt; black tie; leather motorcycle gloves; black shades; white hair pulled back into a ponytail.
Mad Men’s Joan Holloway: The Bombshell

From office to Halloween party? Yes, please! Joan Holloway is the femme fatale of Sterling Cooper—and makes for one sexy costume.
What you’ll need: Pencil skirt; tight, brightly colored sweater; leather briefcase or bag; pearls; stacked Mary Janes. Bonus: Once Halloween is over, these pieces will blend seamlessly into your fall wardrobe.
Diana Ross: The Queen of Pop
Ditch the sexy nurse, kitten or maid costumes, and follow the direction of Vogue by dressing like Diana Ross, one of the most glamorous pop stars ever. Now would be the perfect time to reuse one of those bridesmaid dresses tucked away in your closet!
What you’ll need: A long, flowy metallic dress; gold or silver heels; false eyelashes; and of course, the bigger the hair, the better.
