How to Get Glam in NYC
The holidays may be over, but the flashiest events of the year are still just around the corner. In February, Fashion Week takes over New York City, as do Oscar parties and similar celebrations of celebrity and style.
If you’re traveling to New York City for a glamorous party or event this month — or any time of year, for that matter — you may have remembered to pack your finest outfit (if not, there are more than a few places to shop in the Big Apple). But do you know where to find the finishing touches?
Whether you’re in need of a photobooth-worthy makeover, a fresh manicure or you’re looking to get your hair coiffed or styled, there are quick services available all over the city that will help you get ready for your New York City event, no matter the occasion. Best of all, a handful of these services come straight to you, so you don’t even need to take off your hotel slippers.
Glam + Go
Glam + Go is the perfect spot for travelers who just need to get styled in a hurry. Promising express blowouts on clean, dry hair in 15 New York minutes or less, you don’t need to worry about carving out a huge part of your day to have perfect locks for any occasion (from $29). Best of all, there are six locations around Manhattan, and this can be your one-and-done salon destination: The menu also includes inexpensive men’s “shape-ups” and makeup applications.
If your idea of glamorous means long, natural extensions, there’s really no better place to get your extensions — and get them styled — than RPZL. With two locations in New York City and two more on the way, RPZL is considered the Big Apple’s first express extensions salon, and walk-ins are welcome. Of course, this isn’t exactly an inexpensive way to get ready for your next New York outing. A full set of clip-ons will set you back $250, and if you want to add a blowout, that will set you back $300. If you want less commitment, try a pony extension with styling for $150.
With nearly 20 locations all over Manhattan (not to mention other boroughs), chances are you’re no more than a train stop away from a DryBar. When you need a wash, dry, and style, the $49 blowout price is comparable to other blowout salons in the city — and you can easily choose your look from a menu of styles. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or Champagne at select locations to get the party started a bit early.
Get your favorite salon services (manicure, makeup application, blowout or updo) without having to take off your Frete bathrobe when you book a Glamsquad appointment directly to your hotel room. Makeup sessions start at $75, while a blowout will set you back $50. Book online or through the app, order room service and relax: We can’t really think of a better way to prepare for an evening out than that.
Art of Shaving
Men, don’t worry: There are plenty of ways to get ready for a fabulous affair. One of our favorites is The Art of Shaving Barber Spa, which has locations on Madison Avenue and at Rockefeller Center. Sure, you’ll pay extra for your premium shave or beard trim, express facial or beard trim, but there are few places that specialize in men’s grooming quite like this.
Similar to Glamsquad, Prive lets you book on-demand appointments directly to your hotel room. In addition to hair styling, makeup and nail services, men can also book a cut and style grooming service. And if you’re just trying to squeeze in everything else on your agenda before your big New York City bash, add a Prive spray tan or Pilates session to the order. Men’s grooming starts at $60.
For travelers who want to get a glam makeover without spending a dime, Sephora locations around the city (and elsewhere, for that matter) offer quick, 15-minute, single-focus makeup applications. Book an eye makeup look, a lash application, foundation or a lip for free. If you want a total makeover, spend $50 on in-store purchases that day for a complimentary, 60-minute full-face application — so stock up on your favorite cleanser or primer then.
