How The Refined Traveler Experiences New York

One of the best attributes of New York City is that no matter how many times you may have visited, or how many years you may have lived here, there is always a new place to explore. Whether it’s that little coffee shop that’s just opened, or the new exhibit at the Met, the city never has a dull moment.

In the spirit of continual exploration, here are some ways the refined traveler experiences New York.

Where to stay
In the recent years, the Garment District has experienced a re-emergence as a dining, shopping and cultural destination. With many new restaurants, bars, coffee shops, galleries and more, the neighborhood possesses an undeniable energy. While not as bustling as areas such as Times Square or the Meatpacking District, there’s something special about the quiet nature of the Garment District. Within walking distance of many shopping destinations — as well as Broadway theaters — the Garment District truly offers the best of both worlds.

Where to eat
While some days call for a quick bite on the go, other days allow you to take the time to enjoy a well-prepared meal at a fine establishment here in New York City. For a well-deserved, sit-down meal suitable for the busy traveler, here are a few spots we couldn’t get out of our belly … errrr … we mean mind, this year:

  • Gato, Mediterranean, 324 Lafayette Street, New York, NY, 10012
  • All’onda, Italian, 22 East 13th Street, New York, NY, 10003
  • ABC Kitchen, American, 35 East 18th Street, New York, NY, 10003
  • Arlington Club, Steakhouse, 1032 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY, 10023

If you haven’t already, we suggest you make your way over to any of these amazing restaurants in NYC.

Where to entertain yourself
Though it may seem cliché, New York is truly the city that never sleeps. With a highly effective 24-hour public transportation system and cabs available to hail at any time of day or night, there is no reason for you to be bored in this city. To keep your mind and body in check, head to Bikram Yoga Herald Square for a morning session of hot yoga. If you prefer the great outdoors, reserve a spot among welcoming strangers and expert coaches for a Nike+ run around the city.

After a good workout and some wandering in the city, explore one of the city’s finest art establishments, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Guggenheim, or the Whitney Museum of American Art. In addition to these acclaimed art destinations, Manhattan offers an array of lesser-known museums in NYC, each of which is worth visiting.

Evenings in New York City call for a cocktail and good company. In the spirit of Winnie and her penchant for secret hideaways in the city, head to Bathtub Gin for a risqué adventure in the city. Don’t be fooled by the Stone Street Coffee Company shop up front — the glare of the red light toward the back of the coffee shop is where the fun begins. For the nights when you feel like escaping the bustle of NYC, stop by Wallflower in the West Village, where the drinks are strong and the atmosphere is demure.

When visiting NYC, be sure to leave no stone unturned.
