In the universe of artistic creation and imaginative exploration, there’s plenty of room for ideas that fall outside the classic genres and categories popular culture categorizes art with. American Realness exists for those ideas lacking a home. The American Realness festival showcases various works of experimental and abstract art for a stretch that typically lasts over ten days at the Abrons Art Center in NYC. An example of a Realness event is past performance called In Out of and Into (8/8) Stuff, where two women maneuver their bodies and interact with one another onstage in a physical conversation. Landing outside the boundaries of dance, or theatre, this perfectly exemplifies how American Realness explores expressionism in less-popular ways, shapes and forms. The festival is expected to return to the Abrons Art Center this January.
