What’s Happening in NYC March 2018

The best events happening around town this month.

March may be quieter than most months—Manhattan can be comparatively crowd free this time of year—but the shoulder season actually promises one of the best times to explore New York City.

In addition to occasional rain showers, March brings with it one of the world’s wildest St. Patrick’s Day parades (don’t forget to pack your best emerald-colored clothes) and a prestigious film festival dedicated to cinema for children and teens.

There are basketball games and flea markets, and how could it be spring without flowers? That’s why every year, Macy’s flagship department store celebrates the season with inspired floral displays and festivities. From contemporary art to food truck fare, these are five of the most talked-about events in New York City in March 2018.

Perfect for the entire family, New York International Children’s Film Festival (February 23 – March 18) presents more than 100 short and feature films—along with retrospectives, parties, and conversations. This year’s event includes animated shorts, virtual reality projects, and even a sneak peak screening of season 2 of the Netflix original, A Series of Unfortunate Events. Tickets range from $14 to $20, depending on the event.

One of New York’s preeminent art fairs, The Armory Show returns to the namesake U.S. National Guard armories (at Piers 92 and 94) on March 8. Public hours are generally from noon until 8:00 p.m. through March 11, giving New Yorkers and visitors ample time to explore the sprawling gallery spaces. Sixty-six new vendors will join the fair’s roster of esteemed galleries this year, all of which highlight the greatest artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries.

For a St. Patrick’s Day party that rivals the celebrations of Dublin, there’s no better place to be than New York City. On March 17, revelers don their greenest garments and flock to Fifth Avenue for the annual parade, which begins at 11 in the morning. The parade concludes in the early evening, but the carousing continues all night long in the cities Irish bars and pubs. More info on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York here.
