Midtown Musings: Dover Street Market
Here in Midtown, there’s no shortage of high end boutiques to visit. There’s ritzy Fifth Avenue, and the iconic, old-school high end department stores like Lord & Taylor and Macy’s. And while we love all those, they don’t compare to the unique experience of shopping at Dover Street Market, New York’s outpost of the London original. Current Met Fashion Institute darling Rei Kawakubo created the store, selling clothing, mostly from her boundary-breaking brand Comme des Garçons.
But it’s far from a normal shop. Taking multiple floors of a grand, 1909 building that used to house a design school, Dover Street Market is a testament to wacky design (matching Kawakubo’s bold clothes). Here are photos from our recent visit, which included a stellar lunch at Rose Bakery. The café on Dover Street Market’s ground floor had us feeling like we were in Paris—the multiple people speaking French helped, but so did the baked goods, fresh salads and extra-rich butter.
